Left-to-right addition mirrors how we speak numbers aloud. When you say "eighty-three," you lead with the tens. Adding 47 + 36 by first computing 47 + 30 = 77, then 77 + 6 = 83, keeps a single running total that always reflects the growing magnitude of your answer.

This approach differs from the pencil-and-paper habit of adding ones first and carrying. Carrying forces you to hold a partial ones sum in memory while you work on tens — an extra burden your working memory does not need when calculating mentally.

Compensation is a natural extension. If 47 + 36 feels awkward, round 36 to 40, add 47 + 40 = 87, then subtract the extra 4 to get 83. The total distance between the numbers never changes; you simply chose a smoother path.

With practice, left-to-right addition becomes automatic for two-digit sums and prepares you for adding three or more numbers by maintaining one coherent running total throughout.
