The three anchors: 10%, 5%, and 1%
Ten percent of any number is found by moving the decimal point one place left (or dividing by 10). On $840, 10% is $84. On 640, 10% is 64. This single move is the scaffold for every other common percentage because 5% is half of 10%, and 1% is one-tenth of 10%.
Five percent is half of ten percent. If 10% of 76 is 7.6, then 5% is 3.8. One percent divides by 100: 1% of 640 is 6.4. These three pieces combine additively because percentages are linear: 15% = 10% + 5%, and 18% = 10% + 5% + 3 × 1%. No new rules are required for each percentage you encounter.
Assembling uncommon percentages
Eighteen percent of 250: 10% = 25, 5% = 12.5, 3% = 7.5 (three times 2.5), total 45. Thirty-five percent of 60: 30% = 18 (three × 10%), 5% = 3, total 21. The pattern is always decomposition into anchors you can compute without hesitation.
When a percentage ends in 5, you never need 1% at all — combine 10% and 5% blocks only. When it ends in 0, use 10% blocks exclusively. Reserve 1% for the trailing digits that remain after exhausting fives and tens. This decision tree prevents overcomputation.
Tips, tax, and discounts on money
Tips are percentages applied to dollar amounts, so the anchor method translates directly. Twenty percent tip: double 10%. Fifteen percent: 10% plus half of 10%. Eighteen percent on $62: compute 20% ($12.40) and subtract 2% ($1.24) if eighteen feels less intuitive than twenty.
Discounts compute the saving first, then subtract from the original price. Twenty-five percent off $120 saves 10% + 10% + 5% = $12 + $12 + $6 = $30, leaving $90. Alternatively, recognize you pay 75%, but many people find the saving-first path clearer because it shows the benefit explicitly.
Fractions, decimals, and percentages together
Benchmark fractions convert instantly: 1/2 = 50%, 1/4 = 25%, 1/5 = 20%, 1/8 = 12.5%. Three-eighths is 3 × 12.5% = 37.5%. When no benchmark fits, divide numerator by denominator and multiply by 100, or scale the fraction to a denominator of 100.
Moving among representations makes comparison effortless. Is 3/8 or 37% larger? Convert 3/8 to 37.5% and decide. Is a 20%-off sale or a $15-off coupon better on a $72 item? Compute 20% of 72 = $14.40 versus $15 and choose. Fluid conversion prevents decision paralysis at the shelf.
Avoiding common percentage pitfalls
Stacked discounts are not additive. Thirty percent off followed by ten percent off the sale price is not forty percent off the original. Apply each percentage sequentially to the running price. Mental math here means two quick calculations, not one merged rate.
Distinguish percentage points from percent change. If an interest rate rises from 4% to 5%, that is a one percentage point increase but a 25% relative increase (1/4 of 4). Confusing the two leads to dramatic misinterpretation in news and finance. Know which measure a statement uses before calculating.
